Old Family Photos

I had a friend tell me that she wash hoping that I would post some pictures from my Aunt Bobbie’s photo album. And, actually, I have been meaning to, but well, one thing leads to another. So, without further ado, I am posting some of my favorite pictures. All the pictures here are scanned from the original “tintype” photographs. If you click on the picture, it will pull it up in a new page with a description. Just use your browser’s back button to get back to this post. (Also, if you click on the picture, the entire picture will be shown, not just the tiny ‘thumbnail’s!!)

I really love these pictures! They made me realize that my family really did live in the “Wild West”. Some of the pictures looked just like something out of ‘Tombstone’. They were all in Texas, though. :)

About Valarie

I love to travel and spend time with old friends. I enjoy cool Autumn nights, Summer Lightning Bugs and Spring Thunderstorms. I love my cats, and cannot imagine life without them. :) I write some poetry, and some short stories. Nothing paradigm shifting. I love being Catholic. I enjoy crochet, cooking, and rock-n-roll. I'm easy to get along with, hard to offend, and loyal to the bitter end. My husband and my children are my heroes. Hmmm. . . not too much else to tell.

This is so amazing…you have NO idea how happy this makes me to be able to see these Adams family pictures!! I have never been so happy in my life. To be able to put faces to my ggg grandfather for the first time… I can not possibly thank you enough and would do anything to be able to see more…

I married my 5th cousin, a descendent of Wylie…so he is my childrens ggggggrandfather. I am a descendent of Alzada Adams, she is my gg grandmother…so David G. and Serena Estes…ggg grandparents. These pictures mean more to me than you can ever know. I have a picture of Serena Estes when she was older I will email you. Also a group picture of Francis “Fuzzy” in front of his house…also of his funeral marker dedication.

I’m on cloud nine…and fixin’ to make one woman the happiest she’s ever been, when I tell her about this…. Actually … I know several Adam’s descendents who are going to be ecstatic today.

    I love you already….=D

I am so happy to hear from you, Ginger! This sort of thing makes blogging worth it!! I really DO UNDERSTAND how thrilling it is to find those pictures. When my great aunt told me she had a photo album that was over 100 years old, full of really, really old family pictures, it was all I could do not to lose my mind!! I am so grateful she allowed me to borrow her album last year and scan the pictures in it, because now we can all enjoy them! I have LOTS more pictures, and am more than happy to share.

And BTW: doesn’t David G. look so distinguished and wonderful? He just LOOKS like someone I am proud to be descended from!!

Oh Valerie…you have NOOOOO idea…how many people….are rejoicing at seeing these pictures…and we are going to reap so much from sharing them… no telling what all we will learn…. from this! It’s exciting! The lady who told me about finding this picture on your site, said she hadn’t connected with you…and she is another cousin…named Karen Miller… I am getting so much info so fast…I haven’t had time yet to digest and savor it all…but will asap… here is her first letter to me, maybe you can help figure it all out.

David General Adams was my gggrandfather. His daughter,
    > Rebekah was the
    > mother of my grandfather,
    > Claud Pettigrew. One of my aunt’s gave me some letters
    > that were written
    > around 1910. One is from
    > a Mae or Ma Adams to my grandparents. The envelope says
    > Mrs. Ma or Mae
    > Adams, Owensville, Texas, but
    > Sonora, Tex is written at the top of the actual letter. Do
    > you know who
    > wrote the letter?
    >
    > Also, in a Feb. 1909 letter my grandfather wrote that
    > Marion and Hattie were
    > leaving and it would
    > be very lonesome. At that time, my grandfather lived in
    > Maverick, Texas. The
    > 1910 census lists
    > a Marion Adams, 24, and his wife, Hattie, 20. Do you know
    > if they are
    > related?
    >
    > Thank you for any help.
    > Karen Miller

Here is the second letter I got yesterday:

Thank you so much for the info. My grandfather was Earnest
    > Claud Pettigrew,
    > oldest son of Jim Pettigrew
    > and Beckie Adams. My mother was Claud and Alta Witherspoon
    > Pettigrew’s
    > youngest daughter. They had 7
    > children and 18 grandchildren, of which I am the youngest.
    >
    > None of our family has much info on Jim Pettigrew so any of
    > the “colorful”
    > info that you have would be
    > greatly appreciated. I have managed to trace all branches
    > of my trees except
    > for Jim Pettigrew. The
    > census shows he was born in Indian Territory Oklahoma, but
    > I can’t find out
    > who his parents were, etc.
    >
    > Grandad didn’t care for his dad so everyone kept quiet.
    > One of my aunt’s
    > recently told me that Jim
    > had very red hair and that one of my uncles took after him.
    > She also told me
    > that he ran a saloon
    > somewhere, but she couldn’t remember where. All of my
    > mother’s siblings are
    > gone, except for the
    > two oldest sisters, one is 98 and one 96. The 98 year old
    > aunt told me last
    > summer that she doesn’t
    > remember anything and the 96 has had alzheimer’s for a
    > long time.
    >
    > My mother was very close to her cousins, which were Elmer
    > Pettigrew’s
    > children and also to their
    > sister, Weslie.
    >
    > An interesting note: when I was looking back through the
    > census records,
    > when Elmer was still at
    > home, he was listed as Mattison E. I’m thinking he was
    > named after Mattison,
    > Beckie’s youngest
    > brother.
    >
    > Also, do you have any infomation about Rebekah Pettigrew. I
    > do know from my
    > aunts that grandad
    > loved his mother very much so I am very interested in
    > knowing about her life
    > and if anyone knows
    > what kind of person she was. Until last summer, I
    > couldn’t find her either
    > didn’t know anything
    > about the Adams. By accident, I located her grave on
    > find-a-grave, then from
    > there found out
    > about David General and Serena Estes Adams. (and that’s
    > where I found you!)
    >
    > Do you know where Jim Pettigrew is buried? I can’t
    > locate him.
    >
    > Wow, this is so neat. Thank you for all the work and
    > pictures you put on
    > find-a-grave. It’s nice
    > to know about family.
    >
    > Karen

  5. Terry Adams says:

Found your blog post on David General Adams and thought I would add to it. This is my lineage to David General starting with him:

David General Adams – b.1838 /wife Serena Estes
Wiley Bailey Adams – b.1861 /wife Marion Pope
Marion Edward Adams – b.1885 /wife Hattie Joy Adams
Artie Matthew Adams – b.1913 /wife Bessie Rode
    Tommy Ray Adams – b.1939
Terry Ray Adams (me) – b.1963

Outside of my uncle (Artie Burt Adams, also a son of Artie Matthew Adams), then I am the last male descendant from Marion Edward Adams named Adams. Artie has two girls and not boys and I have two girls and no boys.

David General Adams, Wiley Bailey Adams, and Marion Edward Adams are all buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery near the head of the Llano river which is between Sonora and Junction, Texas off of I-10. The Cemetery sits just inside the Kimble County line next to Sutton County. This is the Cedar Hill community near the very small town of Roosevelt, Texas along the Llano river.

Artie Matthew Adams is buried in the Sonora, Texas Cemetery and Tommy Ray Adams (my father is buried outside of San Angelo, Texas at Lawn Haven Cemetery.)

There are still descendants of David General Adams in and around Sonora, Texas. They have a good bit of history and pictures of the Adams family.

I was born and raised in San Angelo, Texas and live in New Mexico at present.

Anyway, I hope this adds new information to someone who reads this. I have plenty more information but it is not in electronic form. Feel free to contact me.
