This was not something that I was expecting, and yet, I am not surprised. Shocked, but not surprised, if that makes any sense. I am sad, because he has been the Pope the entire time that we have been back in the Church. I came home to the Catholic Church in April of 2005, right after Blessed JPII passed. His death, actually, was a big motivator for me in coming back to the Church. It made me realize how very much I missed it, and how much I loved being Catholic.
And now, Pope Benedict is resigning. I do not know what this will bring, but I do trust the words of our Lord, Jesus:
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18)
So I know that whatever is coming, it will be God’s will, and I am just praying for the Cardinals to have wisdom and clarity, and that their choice will be influenced by none but the Holy Spirit.
