Our Cats Are Still AWOL

Bandit and Mustard

It has now been officially ten days since we last saw Colonel Mustard or Bandit. Faith is giving it until the end of this month until she gives up. I am, for the most part, trying not to think too much about them. We have never had such bad luck with cats before.

Mustard was the King of Cats. You could hear him purr from across the room, and he was poetry in motion to watch. He probably weighed in at close to twenty pounds, and was absolutely graceful. We have had him (and his brother, Piewacket) for ten years. Our home will never be quite the same without him. Neither will Kendall, for he belonged to Mustard.

Bandit was the amazing foldable kitty. You could just scoop him up in your arms and he would conform to whatever shape you were carrying him in. And he would go anywhere you took him, happily. He was delightful to watch, as he chased butterflies in our grass, or stalked bumblebees in our woods. He loved to play, because he was, after all, still just a kitten, at eighteen months old. I have known and loved many cats. He was by far the ‘coolest’ cat we’ve ever had. Faith will never want another cat.

Sadness. . .

4 June 2009

I can’t seem to find happy news anywhere. The economy is still in trouble.

An airplane carrying 228 people disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean a few nights ago, apparently due to flying into a “towering wall of thunderstorms”!!

Obama is over in the Middle East.  That in itself is a bit frightening, but then he goes on to say that America is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world, right on the heels of his comment that we are not a Christian nation, and bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia? (Make no mistake:  if the rest of the world thought ill of us because of Bush, Obama’s spineless groveling is surely not garnering any respect, either!)

That “late-term abortionist” Dr. Tiller was shot and killed on Sunday, so one nutjob has made everyone else in the pro-life movement look bad.  The fact of the matter is, we support and honor all life, even the life of scum-sucking maggots like Tiller.  We are not relativists, like the pro-choice camp.

Faith and Bandit

Faith and Bandit

And probably the worse news of all, at least to me, is that two of our cats have gone missing.  Kendall’s amazing cat, Colonel Mustard and Faith’s cat, the coolest cat that ever lived, Bandit.  Nobody has seen Bandit since Monday, and Mustard has been gone since sometime Tuesday.  This is really, really weird for both of them.  We have, of course, heard lots of stories about cats who disappear for days, weeks, or even months at a time, and then miraculously come home.  I am praying that that will be the case here.  But my heart is so heavy, and I am so sad for my little girl, who is absolutely devastated.

A few months ago, Faith wrote the most delightful children’s story, complete with illustrations that she drew and colored herself, based on Bandit.  It’s called  Trouble in Space.  Bandit inspired her in so many ways, and he has kept the rest of us totally entertained by his adorable antics.  He just HAS to come home!

She has never had good luck with pets.  When she was about three years old, her cat, Daisy, was shot and killed by our druggie neighbors, probably for “sport”.  Then, when she was seven, her little black dog, Angus, was killed by a hit-and-run driver right in front of our house, while Faith and Alex stood at the side of the road, screaming.  Then, in October 2007, her cat, Hermione, disappeared.  So, when she got Bandit from the pet store as a tiny kitten, she swore she’d never let him out of the house.  Eventually, though, it became apparent that he desperately wanted to go outside, and so she gave in, because she loved him so much.  And now he’s gone.

She cried herself to sleep last night.  I woke up every two hours, hoping and praying that he’d be waiting on the front porch this morning.  But no.  And now, Mustard is gone, too.  He is much older, and we had recently been concerned about his health, but we are not in any way ready to say goodbye to him. It’s going to be really dark around here for a few days, at least.

Fireplace Kitty

I know everybody is probably really tired of hearing about my kitten, but, well, he’s just so cute!  I can’t help it.  He has a new favorite place to play, and I wanted to share. . .

Near Tragedy

9 June 2008

I am beginning to understand why cats are said to have nine lives. It’s bad enough that Gaylon found Pippin in a box of garbage on a snowy day. But last Thursday, the little guy fell off of our balcony, onto the stairs! That is about an eight foot drop, onto hard wood. He is okay, but he was really tender and bruised for a day or two. It upset him a lot, and he didn’t move much for a few hours. I was so scared he was going to die, and I just sat on the floor with him and cried.

Two days later, I noticed he was no longer attacking my feet, (he likes to ’stalk’ me while I read email) and when I went to look for him, I found that he had nearly hanged himself with a rope drawstring on a bag in our bathroom! He was just sitting there next to the bag, looking very pitiful, with a ‘noose’ around his little neck. Again, he is okay, but by my calculations, he’s down at least a couple of those nine lives!

I have had many cats in my life, and never before have I had one to get into so much trouble! But he is so cute and adorable, so I have to forgive him. :)

Bright-eyed Pippin
Originally uploaded by Morningtower

Well, I am finally a successful “Mama Kitty”! I have to give a lot of credit to my friend, Martha Jean, who gave me lots of support and advice along the way. Friday, I started working on switching Pippin over from the bottle to ‘real’ kitten food. At first, he didn’t want any part of this plan, and would totally turn his nose up at the food I was offering. I ended up having to smear some of it into his paws, which he then licked off. That got the taste of it to him, and from there the rest was a lot easier. I did have to hold him and the bowl for the first couple of meals, because Pippin is apparently a creature of habit and comfort, but he now has no trouble eating from his bowl on the floor. Now, he eats four full meals a day, from his little kitty bowl. :)

Update on Pippin

30 April 2008

Pippin is still doing really well! He has quadrupled in size and he is really starting to act like a kitten now. He has teeth now, which he is ever ready to test out on my hands or arms. He is teething like crazy! He also spends a lot of his awake time wrestling with the little toy cats and dogs that Faith loaned to him as surrogate litter mates! Best we can tell, he’s winning most of those battles. :D

Next week (or possibly as early as this weekend) I am going to start weaning him. He is adorable, but I am getting very tired from staying up really late and getting up really early to feed him. Wow. . . I really cannot believe I have been bottle feeding a tiny kitten for over two weeks. I am so glad I’ve had help. Faith, Lishi and Mom have been terrific! Gaylon tries to feed him, too, but generally Pippin won’t eat from him.

At any rate, I was so worried when we got him that he wouldn’t make it, because I’m just not good at the whole bottle feeding thing, with human babies, never mind kittens! So I thought it was worth announcing that he’s doing great!

Pippin in Kendall’s Hands

Last Monday, Gaylon found something small, gray and furry in a box of garbage at work. It turned out to be an abandoned kitten! So, we brought him home, and I’ve been bottle feeding him. He opened his eyes Sunday, and so he was apparently about 3 days old when we got him. He is the sweetest, most precious little thing!

I named him Pippin, and he is going to be my cat. (Everybody else already had their own cat.) That has not kept anybody else from loving him, though. :-) Gaylon, Mom, Kendall, Lishi, and of course, Faith, are all as stupid over this little guy as I am.

Anyway, he is delightful, and growing like crazy. Lishi has been having a wonderful time taking awesome pictures of him. So yeah, I’m in love!

Discharged

14 January 2008

Well, I went to see the surgeon this afternoon, and he took my bandages off and discharged me! Yay! I am glad to have them gone, but they did come in handy at one point. I was sitting around talking to Kendall and Gaylon, who were having a friendly debate over who had the worst and most wounds. So I sat there and listened to them for a while, then lifted my shirt up, displaying my ugly, blood-stained bandages, and said “Oh, yeah, guys?? Beat this!!” Yep. . .I won that one!

For free entertainment, we having been watching Faith’s new kitten, Bandit, chase the other cats and Bonnie around the house and try to attack them. It is so funny to watch him! He is this little black puff of fearless fur! Waldo Pepper took a new approach, and just sat on him. I think that should win some sort of award for most random act of heroism!!

In other news, I forgot to mention that Gaylon has gone back to school again. He is now working toward a Business Management Degree. I definitely admire his determination! It does keep him down in his office a lot more, but I do get a kick out of listening to him complain about things like “Moodle”, for his online class!

I have been updating this site bit-by-bit, and have now added pages on Homeschooling and Genealogy. (Subject to change soon). There are some pictures on the Homeschooling page, and I am hoping to add some pictures to the Genealogy page before too long, as well. But that involves uninterrupted scanning, so that may take a while longer. Check back!!
