Alexander was born suspicious. All his life, he’s been suspicious, and while in and of itself, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it makes it almost impossible to surprise him. But, last night, we did it! In fact, he was absolutely blown away! 😀
Last Friday, one of the F.I.S.C.H.E.Teen Moms approached me and let me know that one of the Teens had come up with the idea of having a Going Away party for Alex, before he went off to Boot Camp. I was so touched by this that I almost started crying, right there in the middle of Moonies Burger House, but managed to control myself. It’s just that I’ve been feeling so much emotion lately over Alex enlisting and going to California that I feel like I’m always on the edge of weeping. Anyway, it was discussed and agreed that we would host a surprise party for him, here at our house, and the kids would bring snacks and drinks.
So the next thing was to plan it all out so that he wouldn’t suspect anything. Fortunately, he’s pretty distracted with thoughts of Boot Camp dancing in his head, so it wasn’t that difficult. After dinner last night, Gaylon asked him to go with him to Best Buy to select a GPS device for my mom, to give to her for her birthday, which is tomorrow. Alex didn’t think a thing about it, and off they went! We got the house decorated and everybody got here and we were all ready when Alex got home an hour later!
He was completely shocked when he walked in the front door and 20 kids jumped out and yelled “Surprise!” He just stood there for a second while it all registered. And, it was wonderful! The kids laughed, played guitar and piano, Apples To Apples, Mafia, and ate a TON of food. One of our priests, Father Jonathan, was also able to make it, (he showed up later) and that was a treat for all of the kids, because most of them didn’t know he was coming.
It was one of those absolutely perfect evenings, and I am so grateful for the friends and love that God has blessed us with here. Alex leaves Sunday morning for San Diego, and will be there for 13 weeks of Boot Camp. I am going to miss him so much, but the memory of this wonderful party will definitely help!
